What is PTE?

PTE (Pearson’s Test of English) is the world’s leading computer-based test of English for study abroad and immigration. PTE Academic assesses listening, reading, speaking and writing all via computer in a single 3 hour test session.

To complete a PTE Academic test, you will need to attend a secure Pearson test Centre. You will use a computer and headset to listen to, read and respond to questions.

During the three-hour test session there will be four main parts to the test:

  1. Speaking
  2. Writing
  3. Listening
  4. Reading

There are twenty different question formats, ranging from multiple choice, essay writing and interpreting information.

PTE Academic assesses real-life, academic content, so you will hear excerpts from lectures and view graphs and charts. You will hear a range of accents in the test, from British and American to non-native speakers, so you will be exposed to the type of accents you will encounter in everyday life.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. Do I need computer skills to take the test?

You do not need any special computer skills. To familiarize yourself with the test we suggest you to review the test preparation resources. We recommend taking one of our scored practice tests to get used to the timing and moving through each type of question. PTE Academic is taken using a simple QWERTY keyboard.

2. Is computerized assessment reliable?

PTE Academic’s automated scoring has been constructed by expert human test designers that have created and checked the content of the test questions. The scoring criteria is also designed by human experts that tested and refined more than 10 thousand sample answers that were put together and scaled in the corresponding level.

3. Does PTE Academic discriminate against some accents?

No. The marking engine is trained to recognize speech from over 120 different language groups. One of the benefits of the test being computer scored is that has no bias against any particular accent. All test takers are treated the same. So the score you get represents a true measure of your ability on the day of the test.

4. Can I apply for a re-evaluation?

If you are unhappy with your PTE Academic score, you may request a rescore. Before doing so, test takers must know that PTE Academic is automatically rescored therefore, there are least chances that your overall scores will change. Only spoken responses and open-ended written responses are rescored. If your score changes, it will replace your previous score.

5. How old do I need to be to take PTE Academic?

You must be at least 16 years old. If you are 16 or 17 years old, you must provide a signed parental consent form before taking the test.

6. Can I cancel or reschedule my test?

You can reschedule or cancel your test. If you decide not to take the PTE Academic test after confirming your booking online, you can request a full refund by contacting the customer service team in your region. You must do this within 14 days of confirming your booking.

7. Which countries accept the PTE test?

PTE Academic is accepted for all Australian and New Zealand visa applications.

8. Is PTE an easy test?

PTE is easier as most of the test-takers are more comfortable with computers than humans. Also, PTE is more fair and true test of English. There are 71 questions in PTE Academic in 20 easily understood formats divided into 4 sections. PTE computing engine evaluates everyone equally and fairly irrespective of your dressing sense, ethnicity, age or physical appearance as it is computer based.

9. What is PTE General?

PTE General is also one type of PTE test examination. The test is accredited by QCA, the Qualification and Curriculum Authority. It is a theme-based test designed for the speakers of English as a foreign language (EFL). Through this exam, one’s communication skills are recognized in the reading, writing, listening and reading parts. The PTE General test is not recognised for immigration purposes.

10. How long is PTE score valid for?

The PTE Academic scores are valid up to two years from the date of the exam and the results are declared. Once the two year period gets expired, the PTE score is automatically removed from the site and it will not be visible.
